Information for Volunteers
Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding experience that should benefit both you and the organisation you are working for.
For many voluntary organisations in particular, volunteers are a vital part of their team without whose time, skills and knowledge they could not operate. Even just offering an hour of your time a week can really make a difference.
Who can become a volunteer?
The simple answer is anyone! There are fewer roles for under-16s, but opportunities are out there. We can point you in the right direction if you don't know where to start.
There is something for everyone, no matter what your skills, experience or availability. Even people who work full time may be able to offer a couple of hours a week to coach a youth sports team or serve refreshments.
What can I expect?
Volunteers often tell us that they get back just as much as they give and more! Volunteering can help you increase your confidence, find paid work, learn new skills and make new friends.
Volunteers are part of a work team, and in the workplace they have the same rights as employed staff. Though you will not be paid, volunteers can expect:
- payment of expenses (e.g. travel)
- a description outlining your role and responsibilities
- training and support
How can I find out more?
You can book a volunteer interview with our Volunteer Centre team. This is an informal meeting where you can discuss what you want to get out of volunteering, and get some advice and guidance on what to do next.
Some of our volunteer interviews are conducted by our own volunteers. They can really help you on your volunteering journey! As well as advice, they can share their own experiences and reassure you if you have any worries.
